10 Things to Do Near El Mirage, AZ

Blog Summary: When most snowbirds picture an Arizona winter, they picture Scottsdale, Tucson, or Mesa. El Mirage tends to fly under the radar – which is exactly why guests at Pueblo El Mirage RV & Golf Resort keep telling their friends about it.

Tucked into the Northwest Valley about 30 minutes from downtown Phoenix, El Mirage sits at a near-perfect crossroads. Major league spring training is up the road. Hiking trails are five minutes away. A massive lake is twenty minutes north. World-class botanical gardens, Old Town Scottsdale, and the iconic Camelback Mountain are all reachable within an hour. And when you’re done exploring, you come home to an RV resort with golf right out your door.

If you’re considering booking a seasonal site for next winter, here are 10 reasons you’ll probably want to extend your stay.

1. Desert Diamond Casino West Valley

If you like a little entertainment with your evenings, Desert Diamond Casino West Valley in Glendale is one of the closest full-scale casinos to the resort. Slots, table games, live entertainment, multiple restaurants, and a sports book, it’s a quick drive when you want a change from the resort clubhouse. Many of our seasonal guests make it a Friday-night tradition.

2. White Tank Mountain Regional Park

This one is right in our backyard. White Tank Mountain Regional Park is one of the largest regional parks in Maricopa County, with miles of hiking trails that range from easy nature walks to ambitious climbs. The Waterfall Trail is a favorite – a short, mostly flat route that leads to ancient petroglyphs and (after a winter rain) a genuine desert waterfall.

It’s the kind of place you can visit a dozen times in a season and still find a new trail. And from Pueblo El Mirage, you can be parked at the trailhead in roughly 15 minutes.

3. Lake Pleasant Regional Park

Twenty minutes north of the resort, Lake Pleasant is one of the largest and prettiest lakes in central Arizona. Boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, picnicking, sunset cruises — it’s a full-day destination that surprises a lot of first-time visitors who didn’t expect Arizona to have water like this.

Bring a cooler, rent a boat for the afternoon, or just walk the shoreline and watch the bighorn sheep that live in the surrounding hills. If you’ve got kids or grandkids visiting, this is the trip that wins you the “best grandparents ever” award.

4. Surprise Stadium: Cactus League Spring Training

This might be the single biggest reason snowbirds book February and March stays at Pueblo El Mirage.

Surprise Stadium is the Spring Training home to the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals, and it’s about 10 minutes from the resort. The stadium seats 10,500 fans and sits on a 124-acre complex with six full practice fields. Tickets are affordable compared to regular-season MLB, the weather is perfect, and you can catch teams from all over the Cactus League rotating through.

If you’ve never done Cactus League baseball before, plan your trip so you can. It’s the kind of experience that makes people book the same site again the very next year.

5. Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park

About 15 minutes south in Litchfield Park, Wildlife World is bigger than most people expect. Arizona’s largest collection of exotic and endangered animals, with over 600 separate species on display, plus an aquarium, safari park, daily shows, and rides.

It’s a hit with visiting grandkids and an underrated attraction for adults too. Feeding giraffes, watching the sea lion show, and walking through the aquarium tunnel are all genuinely memorable. Senior discounts are available every Tuesday with a valid AAA card – worth knowing if you’re planning a midweek visit.

6. Desert Botanical Garden

About 45 minutes east in Phoenix, the Desert Botanical Garden is one of the country’s premier showcases of desert flora – 50+ acres of saguaros, agaves, wildflowers, and seasonal exhibits. The night-lighting events around the holidays (Las Noches de las Luminarias) and the Chihuly glass installations in different years draw visitors from all over the country.

Plan a half-day, bring a hat, and go in the morning. It’s especially beautiful between November and April, which happens to be exactly when most of our seasonal guests are here.

7. Old Town Scottsdale

You can’t really say you’ve done Arizona without spending an afternoon in Old Town Scottsdale. About 45 minutes from the resort, it’s a walkable district packed with Southwestern art galleries, boutique shopping, restaurants, and the famous Scottsdale ArtWalk every Thursday evening.

It’s also where you’ll find some of the best Mexican food and steakhouses in the Valley. Park once, walk for hours, and come home with a few stories.

8. Camelback Mountain

For the adventurous guests in our community, Camelback Mountain is the iconic Phoenix hike. Two trails: Echo Canyon and Cholla, both rated difficult, both rewarding the climb with panoramic views of the entire Valley.

A word of honesty: Camelback is a real workout, especially the last stretch, and it gets hot fast. Go early, bring more water than you think you need, and skip it on summer days. But if you’re in good shape and want a bucket-list Phoenix hike, this is the one.

9. Downtown Glendale & Westgate Entertainment District

About 20 minutes from the resort, Westgate Entertainment District is the West Valley’s hub for dining, live music, sports, and events. State Farm Stadium (home of the Arizona Cardinals) and Desert Diamond Arena are both right there, and the open-air dining and entertainment plaza is great for date nights or group outings.

Just south, Historic Downtown Glendale is a charming antique district with seasonal events, holiday lights, and quirky shops worth a slow afternoon.

10. Greater Phoenix Events Worth Planning Around

Beyond the standing attractions, the Greater Phoenix area hosts a packed calendar of events that seasonal guests love to plan around. The Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale every January, the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale in February (the loudest tournament on the PGA Tour), the Arizona Renaissance Festival running February through April, rodeos, art festivals, air shows, and the Phoenix Open’s general winter event season – there’s almost always something within an hour’s drive.

Snowbirds who plan ahead and grab tickets early often build their entire winter calendar around two or three of these events, with hiking, golf, and resort life filling in between.

Why Guests Keep Coming Back

After this list, you can probably see the pattern. Pueblo El Mirage isn’t just a place to park your RV, it’s a basecamp. You’re close enough to everything that matters in the Valley to be there in 30-45 minutes, but far enough out that you’re not paying Scottsdale prices, fighting Scottsdale traffic, or dealing with Scottsdale crowds when you come home at night.

And then there’s the resort itself: golf course, heated pools, pickleball, 200+ activities, on-site dining at Pueblo Bistro, and the kind of community where you’ll have a regular Tuesday morning coffee group by the end of your first month.

Most of our seasonal guests tell us the same thing: they came planning to “try it for one winter.” A lot of them are now on year five.
